There used to be a huge tumor in the abdomen of the 55 year-old Syrian Chief Justice, but on July 12th, 2011, his nightmare had disappeared because Dr. Lizhi Niu and Dr. Feng Mu from Fuda Hospital had successfully resected the tumor which weighed 18kg.

A huge tumor could kill a person.

The 55 year-old chief justice M who came from Syria, underwent a colonscopic examination in Sept. 2009 in Syria. He was diagnosed colon cancer and had a radical surgery of his colon cancer in October. After 8 months' treatment, the recurrence of the abdominal tumor and peritoneal metastases were shown by PET-CT scan.

To search for better treatment, he came to Fuda Hospital on June 30th, 2011. He was diagnosed recurrence of colon cancer (stage IV). M was so thin and weak when he was just admitted to FUDA that he couldn't even walk alone. Several solid tumors with different sizes could be touched in his abdomen, some were as big as a fist, some were as small as an egg.

Mr. M vomited and had severe intestinal obstruction symptoms after he was admitted to FUDA. The intestinal obstruction was so rapid and severe that intestinal functional changes had also come up. Imbalance of body fluids and electrolytes were also complicated by the obstruction. Failure of intestinal wall circulation, necrosis and secondary infection would lead to shock and death. What's worse, the recurrent colon cancer would develop and spread to affect other organs of the body, leading worse condition that we could hardly control.

highly difficult surgery

The professional medical team had a discussion on how to save M's life properly because of his severe condition. Resecting the tumor in a surgery would be a better choice since the abdominal tumor was huge. However, there must be several complications causing by the surgery: massive hemorrhage during the surgery, massive hemorrhage in the abdomen and intestines, et al. This huge tumor in abdomen could also affect the patient's respiratory and blood circulation systems.

To be or not to be, that's a question. Without a surgery, the patient was getting worse and worse day by day; to do a surgery, there's also high risks inside -- complications. To be responsible to the patient, President Kecheng Xu made a prompt decision to have the surgery immediately to save the chief justice's life after explaining the situation to the patient himself and his families.

On July 13th, Dr. Lizhi Niu, Dr. Feng Mu and Dr. Haibo Li had a surgery full of heartquake on the patient. All staff in the operation room were shocked because the tumor weighed as much as 18kg! When other patients heard this exciting news, they all came to express their congratulations to the chief justice and the appreciation to our technology spontaneously.
